True Sport Foundation Announces 2021 Recipients of the Sport Study Scholarship from the Lyle Makosky Values and Ethics in Sport Fund
(Ottawa, Ontario – June 28, 2021) – The True Sport Foundation is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2021 Lyle Makosky Values and Ethics in Sport Fund sport study scholarship. The awards, in the amount of $2,000 each, have been awarded to Alyssa Cox for her project, “Sample or Specialize? Exploring youth sport coaches’ perspectives and practices on early sport specialization,” and Erin Wilson for her project, “Gender-based violence in youth athletes.”
The Lyle Makosky Values and Ethics in Sport Fund is a national endowment fund established by life-long leader in sport, Lyle Makosky. The sport study scholarship program provides annual financial awards to support the study of values and ethics-based challenges, and related policies affecting non-professional Canadian sport. The True Sport Foundation manages and selects award winners.
“There is usually a question of values at the core of the challenges and issues facing sport today… which values do we wish to be embodied and reflected in Canadian sport; which values are important to engage; which fundamental values are under threat, and so on. It is encouraging to see that the Values and Ethics Fund is helping to reveal and support the thoughtful and engaging study of such questions in Canadian sport,” said Lyle Makosky on the announcement of the 2021 awards.
“Alyssa and Erin’s research, combined with their athletic experiences, will make an important contribution to the Canadian sport community,” said Karri Dawson, Executive Director of the True Sport Foundation. “The True Sport Foundation is pleased that this scholarship is providing meaningful support for the thoughtful examination of values-based sport in a Canadian context.”
Alyssa Cox is completing her Masters of Kinesiology and Recreation at the University of Manitoba. Both recipients are active in the Canadian sport community. Erin Wilson is currently completing her PhD in Kinesiology at the University of Toronto.
“I would like to thank the True Sport Foundation and the Lyle Makosky Values and Ethics in Sport Fund for their generosity and recognition,” said Alyssa. “Thanks to their support my research will explore coach perceptions regarding sport specialization and long-term athlete development. The results of which will lead to improved coach education, and will promote a sport environment that is conducive to optimal participation and development of athletes in Manitoba.”
“I am honoured to be a recipient of the Lyle Makosky Values and Ethics in Sport Fund and am grateful for the support of the True Sport Foundation.” said Erin. ” This fund will enable me to continue my passion for creating a safer sport environment, one that is free of abuse, harassment, and discrimination, for all athletes in Canada, particularly youth and those from equity-deserving groups.”
