True Sport Foundation Announces 2022 Recipients of the Sport Study Scholarship from the Lyle Makosky Values and Ethics in Sport Fund

Ottawa – June 15, 2022 – The True Sport Foundation is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2022 Lyle Makosky Values and Ethics in Sport Fund sport study scholarship. The awards, in the amount of $2,000 each, have been awarded to Gianluca Agostinelli for the project, “Sporting ethical masculinities: Narratives of student-athletes contesting rape culture in Canadian universities,” and Stephanie Dixon for the project, “Athlete Experiences of the Complaint Process.”

The Lyle Makosky Values and Ethics in Sport Fund is a national endowment fund established by life-long leader in sport, Lyle Makosky. The sport study scholarship program provides annual financial awards to support the study of values and ethics-based challenges, and related policies affecting non-professional Canadian sport. The True Sport Foundation manages the fund and selects award winners.

“There is usually a question of values at the core of the challenges and issues facing sport today… which values do we wish to be embodied and reflected in Canadian sport; which values are important to engage; which fundamental values are under threat, and so on. It is encouraging to see that the Values and Ethics Fund is helping to reveal and support the thoughtful and engaging study of such questions in Canadian sport,” said Lyle Makosky on the announcement of the 2022 awards.

“The True Sport Foundation is pleased that this scholarship is providing meaningful support for the thoughtful examination of ethical issues impacting sport in Canada,” said Karri Dawson, Executive Director of the True Sport Foundation. “Gianluca and Stephanie’s research projects will provide insight that we believe will have a positive impact on athlete experiences and will make an important contribution to the Canadian sport community.”

Gianluca is completing a PhD at Brock University. Stephanie is completing a master’s degree at the University of Toronto. Both recipients are active in the Canadian sport community.

“I am grateful for the support of the True Sport Foundation and the Lyle Makosky Values and Ethics in Sport Fund. This scholarship will help finance my doctoral studies and the dissemination of my research, which explores how male student-athletes are challenging rape culture on campus. My dissertation discusses ethical practices and educational programming that Canadian universities and athletic organizations can adopt as part of their ongoing commitment to preventing sexual violence against women,” said Gianluca. “In line with the principles of safe sport championed by this foundation, I hope to continue inspiring team dynamics that motivate positive, lasting change.”

“Sport has been a part of my life as long as I can remember, and I am passionate about contributing to safer and more affirming sport environments. I am grateful for the support of the True Sport Foundation and honoured to be a recipient of the Lyle Makosky Values and Ethics in Sport Fund,” said Stephanie. “This support will advance my research project on athletes’ experiences of the reporting process.”
